Get the voice note off your phone
WhatsApp saves voice messages as .opus files. RocketScribe accepts that format directly, so the only step is getting the file out of WhatsApp. The menus differ a little between WhatsApp versions, so treat the steps below as a guide.
On Android, long-press the voice message in the chat and look for the share icon at the top of the screen. Share the file to your Files app, Google Drive or another place you can open from a browser. Voice notes are also stored in a folder named WhatsApp Voice Notes inside WhatsApp's Media folder. On recent Android versions this sits under Android, then media, then com.whatsapp. The notes are sorted into numbered subfolders.
On iPhone, long-press the voice message and tap Forward. Instead of picking a chat, tap the share icon and choose Save to Files. The note is saved as an .opus file you can pick when you upload.
If you have several voice notes from the same chat, save each one the same way. Each file becomes its own transcript.
Upload the .opus file
You can do the whole thing on the phone. Open RocketScribe in your phone's browser, tap the upload box and choose the voice note from Files or Drive. There is no app to install. If you sent the file to your computer, upload it from there instead.
If you saved the voice note to Google Drive or Dropbox, you can also import it from a link. You do not need to convert the .opus file to MP3 first. WhatsApp voice notes are usually small files, so the upload is quick even on mobile data.
Forwarded voice notes and notes you recorded yourself work the same way. The transcript keeps timestamps, so in a long note you can click a line and hear that part again to check a name or a number.
Why turn WhatsApp voice notes into text
Voice notes are fast to send and slow to receive. A long one is hard to skim, and you cannot search it. A written copy helps in many everyday situations.
- Reading a long message when you cannot play sound, such as in a meeting or on a train.
- Saving instructions, addresses or order details someone sent by voice.
- Quoting a client or supplier accurately in an email.
- Keeping a written record of a voice message from family.
- Sending a clear copy to someone who has trouble hearing the audio.
What to expect from voice note transcription
WhatsApp voice notes are recorded on a phone microphone, often outdoors, in a car or with a TV in the background. Clear speech held close to the phone transcribes very well. Traffic, wind and other people talking will cause more mistakes. Fix them in the editor while the note plays.
For short notes, choose the language yourself rather than relying on auto-detect, which has little speech to work with in a few seconds. RocketScribe supports 90+ languages and handles notes that mix Chinese and English.
WhatsApp can show a short transcript inside the chat on some phones and in some languages. RocketScribe is useful when you want an editable copy with timestamps, to export the text as TXT, Word or PDF, or to keep many notes together in one place.
Getting the text out
The Copy button puts the whole transcript on your clipboard, ready to paste into a chat, an email or a notes app. For a record you want to file, export TXT, DOCX or PDF, and turn timestamps off if you only need the words. Voice notes can be personal, so only upload messages you are entitled to share. Your files are never used to train AI models, and you can delete them at any time.
