What each product is for
Otter is an AI meeting notetaker. Its bot joins Zoom, Microsoft Teams and Google Meet, or you record in its app, and it transcribes as people talk. Afterwards it gives you a summary, action items and a chat over the meeting. You can import audio and video files too, but imports are a secondary feature with their own limits.
RocketScribe does one thing: it turns recordings you already have into editable transcripts. You upload a file, record in the browser or paste a link, then edit the text against a synced player and export it. It has no meeting bot, no live transcription and no mobile app.
Where Otter is better
For meetings, Otter does a lot that RocketScribe does not try to do. The bot works on every plan, including the free one, so you never have to remember to record. Live transcription lets you follow along or catch up mid-call. Apps for iOS, Android and desktop, plus a Chrome extension, cover in-person conversations and calls on any device.
Otter labels speakers on the free plan, while RocketScribe keeps speaker identification for paid plans. It writes summaries and action items itself, and RocketScribe only copies your transcript and a prompt for you to paste into ChatGPT or Claude. Pro and higher plans connect to Zapier, Salesforce and HubSpot, and Otter syncs Zoom cloud recordings automatically. Teams get shared workspaces, shared speakers and custom vocabulary. If most of your audio is meetings you take part in, Otter is the better fit.
Where RocketScribe is better
The difference shows when you have a lot of files, long files or files in other languages.
- File count: Otter's free plan allows 3 imports for the life of the account, and Pro allows 10 a month. RocketScribe's free plan allows 3 files every day, and paid plans are limited only by minutes.
- Length: Otter's free plan transcribes only the first 30 minutes of a file. RocketScribe accepts files up to 5 hours on Plus and 10 hours on Unlimited.
- Links: Otter cannot import from YouTube or other links. RocketScribe imports from YouTube, SoundCloud, Dropbox, Google Drive and direct links.
- Languages: Otter supports 6 languages, and RocketScribe supports 90+, including recordings that mix Chinese and English.
- Exports: Otter's free plan exports TXT only. Every RocketScribe plan exports TXT, DOCX, PDF, SRT, VTT and CSV.
- Price: Plus costs $10 a month or $72 a year, for one person, with 1,200 minutes. Otter Pro costs $16.99 a month or $8.33 a month billed annually, per user, with 1,200 minutes shared between meetings and imports. A $10 pack of 600 minutes also works without a subscription.
Who should pick which
Pick Otter if you mainly need notes from live meetings, want a bot to record them for you, or need mobile apps and summaries without leaving the product. Its free plan with 300 minutes a month is a good place to start.
Pick RocketScribe if you mainly transcribe recordings such as interviews, lectures, podcasts, voice memos or YouTube videos, if your audio is not in one of Otter's 6 languages, or if you need subtitles in SRT or VTT. Some people use both: Otter for their own calls, and RocketScribe for everything recorded elsewhere.
