Rev Alternatives for Transcribing Files

Rev sells AI transcription plans built around legal and investigative work, plus human transcription by the minute. We make RocketScribe, so it's listed first; the rest are ranked by how well they fit people who mainly transcribe recordings.

Prices and limits of other products checked in October 2026 on their own websites. They change often; check the vendor's site before you buy.

Why people look for Rev alternatives

Rev now presents its subscription as an investigative platform, with multi-file analysis, a document editor and legal page and line citations. Those tools are useful for legal and investigative teams. Someone who only wants text from a podcast, lecture or interview pays for features they will not use.

The numbers explain most of the searches. Rev's free plan gives 45 AI minutes a month and transcribes English only. Essentials costs $29.99 per user a month, or $25.49 billed yearly, and adds Spanish. Other languages need Pro at $59.99 per user a month, or $47.99 billed yearly. Pay-as-you-go AI transcription is $0.25 a minute. Human transcription is $1.99 a minute and English only.

Rev is still a strong choice when you need a person to check the transcript, legal formatting, or compliance such as HIPAA on its custom-priced plan. None of the AI-only tools on this page replace that.

How to choose by the job you have

Start with what you record and what you need back. Then check the per-file limit against your longest recording, and whether you need speaker labels on the plan you can afford.

  • Mostly recordings and files: RocketScribe, TurboScribe and Sonix are built around uploads and links. RocketScribe Plus and the Minute Pack suit moderate use, TurboScribe Unlimited suits very large monthly volumes, and Sonix suits occasional pay-per-hour use.
  • Mostly meetings: Otter.ai and Transkriptor join Zoom, Teams and Google Meet with a bot and have mobile apps. Rev also includes an AI notetaker on every plan.
  • Human-checked accuracy: Rev at $1.99 a minute for English, or Happy Scribe from $2.00 a minute in a wider range of languages.
  • Offline or privacy-first: MacWhisper runs on your Mac and its free version states no usage limits. It needs a Mac, and Pro is about €65 one-time.

How we checked

We read each vendor's own pricing and help pages in October 2026 and recorded monthly and annual prices from both settings of the billing toggle. Where a vendor did not state a limit, the table says "Not stated". Where two of a vendor's own pages disagreed, we left that point out. Prices change often, so check the vendor's pricing page before you buy.

FAQ

Questions, answered.

What is the best free alternative to Rev?+

It depends on what you transcribe. For files, RocketScribe and TurboScribe both allow 3 files a day of up to 30 minutes each, in many languages, while Rev's free plan is 45 minutes a month in English only. On a Mac, the free version of MacWhisper transcribes locally with no stated usage limit. For meetings, Otter.ai's free Basic plan gives 300 minutes a month, but only 3 file imports for the life of the account.

Is there a cheaper alternative to Rev's human transcription?+

Not among the tools we checked. Rev charges $1.99 a minute for English human transcription. Happy Scribe starts at $2.00 a minute for English, Spanish and Polish and also covers languages Rev does not. RocketScribe, TurboScribe, MacWhisper, Transkriptor and Otter.ai are AI-only, and Sonix refers users to partner transcriptionists without stating a price.

Does RocketScribe offer human transcription?+

No. RocketScribe produces AI transcripts only. You can edit the text and rename speakers yourself, but no person reviews the transcript. If you need a human-verified transcript, Rev or Happy Scribe sell that service.

Which Rev alternative is best for non-English audio?+

Rev's free plan is English only, Essentials adds Spanish, and other languages need Pro. RocketScribe supports 90+ languages, TurboScribe 98+, MacWhisper 100, Transkriptor 100+ and Happy Scribe 150+. Otter.ai supports 6.

Can I pay as I go instead of subscribing?+

Yes, with several of these tools. Rev's pay-as-you-go AI transcription is $0.25 a minute. Sonix charges $10 per hour of audio. RocketScribe's Minute Pack costs $10 for 600 minutes, stays valid for 12 months, and can be stacked. MacWhisper Pro is a one-time purchase of about €65.

Should legal teams switch away from Rev?+

Usually not. Rev offers legal formatted transcripts, page and line citations, and HIPAA and CJIS compliance on its custom-priced plan. The tools on this page are a better fit for people who mainly need plain transcripts of recordings at a lower price.
